We need these stations every day, and now- they need us.

The voice of reason can no longer be freely disseminated effectively at the time that it is most needed, and it is therefore essential that we reconnect with our communities and encourage them to protect the infrastructure that will take them into a brighter future. Vuselela is a fundraising initiative established to rescue affected community radio stations and get them back to full operation.

We, as the staff of the Abundant Media Group, a media company that has supported and sustained the Community Media Sector since 1999, have been shocked and dismayed at the targeted destruction and looting of several community radio stations in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.

These stations are the heartbeat of the communities they broadcast in and the communities around them are grieving, both for the losses incurred personally to their livelihood, and that their local radio station is not able to broadcast. Many of the listeners rely on the stations for their source of information and vital news.

We would be so grateful if we could somehow assist in the facilitation of the rebuilding of these studios as the stations are non-profit organisations and rely heavily on advertising and funding to sustain themselves. Due to the loss of the ability to broadcast they are also now not able to broadcast essential advertising that will completely deplete their resources.

We would like to appeal for any type of funding or donations of equipment, furniture or any other support. We have arranged an Auditors Trust Account for donations for auditing purposes and we guarantee that all funds will be distributed accordingly. There is no benefit to Abundant Media in any way. The Abundant Media Group is 100% Black owned and you are therefore entitled to treat your contribution as a tax deduction, for which we will supply the necessary documentation upon receipt of your contribution. Attached is a copy of our sworn affidavit regarding our qualification criteria.

Various stations in Gauteng & KZN have also promised to give contributors added value advertising packages which will be conveyed to you under separate cover.

The Abundant Media Group has assisted the stations worst hit to get back on-air and in addition to this we have pledged R50 000 (Fifty Thousand Rand) to the Trust Account. I urge you to please support this crucial part of our community.

The voice of reason can no longer be freely spread to the community at the time that it is most needed.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Community radio is exactly what the name implies. It keeps communities educated, informed and inspired on a proximal level and drives growth for those that the stations serve. The Abundant Media Group has embarked on a fundraising journey, aptly named Vuselela: #RescueRadio. Its purpose is to raise funds in a move to try and save community broadcasters that have been affected by the civil unrest in South Africa.

These community stations are the life blood and voices of their communities, and are essential in the sharing of information, education, and direction. They are also mostly manned by community members, making them an integral part of the infrastructure and social frame of the communities they serve. Ordinarily, the stations manage to cover much of their annual operational costs through advertising by brands, local businesses and organisations. The looting & pillage that we have witnessed in the country has not only had a huge impact on the trading sectors within communities, but ironically has led to the cessation of the very medium that feeds their soul – community radio.

THE HARD TRUTH

60%
ALL STATION’S WHOSE SURVIVAL IS UNDER THREAT

30%
ARE THE MOST CONSUMED FORM OF BROADCAST MEDIA IN THEIR COMMUNITY

7%
FACE CERTAIN SHUT DOWN WITHOUT YOUR HELP

The crowdfunding target is R3 000 000.

It will be used to help retain the team as well as rebuild the radio infrastructure. The station’s monthly outgoings include mast rental, software license and utilities.

In the case where patrons do not specifically mention which station they’d like to contribute towards, the funds will be distributed proportionally for the affected stations.

The voice of reason can no longer be freely disseminated to the community at the time that it is most needed.

It is absolutely essential to reconnect the community with reality during these times & encourage them to protect the infrastructure that will take them into a bright future.

TAKE ACTION

Our local radio stations are the voices of our people and are crucial in the sharing of daily information, education & direction. They are also integral to the promotion of local businesses and are manned & managed by community members.

Unfortunately, a number of these stations have been completely vandalized & looted during the civil unrest that has recently occurred and has led to the disruption of the very medium that serves the heart & soul of our communities.

The voice of reason can no longer be freely disseminated effectively at the time that it is most needed, and it is therefore essential that we reconnect with our communities and encourage them to protect the infrastructure that will take them into a brighter future.
